About
OKAI The
organization was formed on 1st May 2001 by Sensei
Salil Nadkarni(Godan in Isshinryu Karate and Chodan in Taekwondo),a
resident of Pune,Maharashtra,India with a view to impart
Kobudo(traditional Okinawan
weaponary)training to the interested students in this wonderful art. Salil
has a beautiful Honbu dojo with all natural surrounding in Model
colony,Pune,where he also runs Isshinryu Karate & Kobudo
Association of India(IKKAI). Sensei
Salil has experience in using 4 Okinawan weapons viz. Bo(6 foot long
staff),Sai(a trenchon like weapon),Nunchaku(Two sectional cudgel) and
Tonfa.Salil decided to opt for a system which will give him a more
in-depth knowledge of Okinawan Kobudo.He therefore joined the “International
Okinawa Kobudo Association (IOKA)”headed by one of the foremost
authorities on Okinawan kobudo as well as one of it’s masters,”Saikoh-Shihan Mikio Nishiuchi”.Salil became member of IOKA on 9th
July 2001. At
present he has dojo of Kobudo in Pune and branch dojos at Chennai and
Pondicherry. About
IOKA Shihan
Mikio Nishiuchi officially formed International Okinawa Kobudo
Association (IOKA) in 1990.He is direct student of the late master
Shimpo Matayoshi and Takashi Kinjo,both from Okinawa,Japan.There are
approximately 35 IOKA member dojos
worldwide. About
Masters 1)
Late master Shinko Matayoshi :
(1888-1947) He
was born in Naha region in a wealthy family.His Kobujutsu training
started in his early teens.At the age of 22 he ventured into Manchuria
by way of northern Japan.There he joined a team of bandits and learned
several other weapons.When he returned to Okinawa,he traveled to Jien
province and to Shanghai and learned 2)
Late master Shimpo Matayoshi(Judan)
: (!922-1997) He
is son of Master Shinko,he started his training at the age of eight
under Chotoku Kyan.Upon his father’s return in 1934 he studied under
father’s tutelage.Upon his father’s death he assumed the traing
responsibilities of his father.In 1970 he formed “ALL
Okinawan Kobudo federation(Zen Okinawan Kobudo Renmei)” Until
his death in 1997 he was technical advisor of the organization. 3)
Kinjo Takashi Kaicho(Kudan) : He
learned Kobudo from Master Shimpo Matayoshi,recently deceased
president of Zen Okinawa Kobudo Renmei.kinjo Takashi Kaicho is famous
for his Iyeku kata and second to none in performance. 4)
Saiko Shihan mikio Nishiuchi : Shihan
Mikio Nishiuchi stayed in Okinawa and learned Kobudo from Master
Shimpo Matayoshi and Kinjo Takashi kaicho (both these masters are from
Naha,Okinawa).Shihan Mikio Nishiuchi is training for 45 years.He was
born andlived in Kochi city, Japan and came to USA when he was 30
years old. 5)
Shihan Mary Bolz (Rokudan) : Shihan
bolz started learning in Matsutama city,Shikoku island,Japan.She lived
and studied in Japan for 7 years.She is practicing martial arts for 26
years.She is direct student of Shihan Ken-ichi Tatara(Wadoryu
Karate),Shihan Mikio Nishiuchi(Pangainoon ryu,Okinawan Kobudo),Kaicho
Takashi Kinjo(Okinawan kobudo).She is Roku(6th)dan in
Okinawan Kobudo and Go(5th)dan in Karate.
No previous Karate or any Martial Art experience is needed to learn Kobudo. OKAI Honbu Dojo(Pune) Schedule : Sunday
